Why Drying Demand Hits So Hard

Corn generally comes out of the field somewhere around 20 to 25% moisture and needs to come down to roughly 15% to store safely — lower still if you're holding it into summer.

Every one of those points comes off with heat, and heat means propane. A common extension figure puts it near 0.02 gallons per bushel for each point of moisture removed. Run that across your bushels and the total adds up faster than most folks expect.

Here's the part worth planning around. When a wet year arrives, it doesn't arrive for your farm alone — it arrives across the whole region in the same week.

Drying demand climbs everywhere at once, right as home heating season is getting started. Those two demands stack on top of each other, and they stack on the same trucks and the same supply chain.

Worth Knowing: Propane Keeps

Unlike diesel or gasoline, propane has an indefinite shelf life and won't degrade sitting in your tank. Gallons you take in September are exactly as good in November, so there's no penalty for filling early.
